The Romanian New Wave started with Trafic, which was presented in Cannes, and won the Short Film Palme d'Or.
This movement is marked by ultra-realism, in response to artistic censorship under Ceaucescu's reign. It often take place in the 80s, when life under communism regime was the hardest in the country, and shows what artists where not allowed to show at the time, ie what the real life looked like under regime speeches. This results in long still shots, black humour and often dark stories about romanian lower class.
